PEG PICKS RETURNS TO THE NIGHTLIGHT!
I sat back down with PEG Producer, Andrew Nalette, to talk about the upcoming third installment of the PEG Picks at the Nightlight movie series.
Brianna: Hi, Andrew. We are back here again to talk about PEG Picks at The Nightlight. We are halfway through the series!
Andrew: Two down and two to go! We have been having a lot of fun. And we are excited about this latest pick.
Brianna: What have you chosen for movie #3? The 2000s!
Andrew: Our 2000s movie is Mean Girls.
Brianna: Oh wow. One of my personal favorites. It will be so hard to not speak in strictly Mean Girls quotes throughout the rest of this interview.
Andrew: Exactly. This was one of the reasons we had to choose this film. Since it's release 14 years ago, it amassed a pretty large cult-like following and was an instant classic. The cultural impact, the quotability, the relatability of this movie was so widespread and has only continued to grow over the last decade or so. Everyone can quote this movie, even if they haven't seen it. Lines like "She doesn't even go here" and "You go, Glen Coco" have become a part of our regular pop-culture rhetoric.
Brianna: This list goes on and on. I can't believe it came out 14 years ago. It still feels like a recent movie.
Andrew: The issues and the characters are still so relevant, its easy to keep watching even a decade later. If you grew up in a public high school during that time, you can relate to it. No matter who you are, there is some part of Mean Girls that is accessible to your life and your experiences. It's almost like a John Hughes film for this generation.
Brianna: I know I could certainly relate to this movie.
Andrew: Everyone could! What is so unique is that all the major characters are female, the original book was by a female (Rosalind Wiseman), the screenplay is written by a female (Tina Fey), and you even spend most of the movie inside the head of the female narrator! But everyone was able to relate to them in some way, regardless of their gender. You either were one of those characters or you know someone from high school who was those characters. It really showed that these people don't have to be bland to be relatable and approachable, but they also don't have to be over-exaggerated caricatures or stereotypes.
Brianna: The characters are so important, because this movie is relying on the acting and the storytelling rather than on any sort of special effects to really carry the film.
Andrew: The style is one that uses simpler cinematography and a very traditional style of editing. But I don't think it works in any other way. It allowed them to sparingly use effects or editing techniques to break up any monotony and change up the pacing of the movie so those parts really stand out and become memorable.
Brianna: Like that cafeteria fight scene that turns into a jungle?
Andrew: Haha. Yes, just like that.
Brianna: Well, I can watch this movie over and over again and it still holds up. I can't wait to wear my pink and watch it on the big screen with PEG on the 24th. Thank you, Andrew.
