We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Why it’s a thing: Capturing animal footage never looks easy... and making it look THIS good certainly isn't easy. But the beauty and cinematography levels in the newest iterations of the Planet Earth series are simply stunning. Their team explains how advances in technology, like cameras and stabilization, have made it possible for them to get these high-quality shots without being highly invasive. 

 

The Problem Solving of Filmmaking

Why it’s a thing: Sometimes directors have brilliant ideas that come to life in their films... and other times it's just a perfect mix of circumstance and creative problem solving. From scene continuity to availably of actors to fixing an overlooked error - filmmaking is one small solution after another. It is a giant (fun) puzzle. 

 

How Filmmakers Use Aspect Ratios to Tell Better Stories

Why it’s a thing: Aspect ratios are probably not a part of watching videos that the casual viewer will even really notice. But they are a powerful tool to subtly help enhance mood and tension in pieces. From a feeling of paranoia to an expression of freedom, something as simple as an aspect ratio can make a big difference to a piece.

This article goes behind the scenes of  “Midsommar” to explain the strategies (and challenges) that gave the film it’s colorful, over-exposed stylistic look. Not exactly your typical horror movie genre color scheme.

Why it’s a thing: Explaining something as seemingly simple as the basics of baseball could be boring. But this animation is anything but. It is a fun, colorful piece that is just enjoyable to watch, even if you already know the a little bit about the game.
